In 1777, wheat was first planted in America by none other than George Washington. Just over 200 years later, wheat ales made their way into the American craft brewing scene courtesy of Anchor Brewing in California. A few years after that, the style helped save the Widmer Brothers brewery from closing its doors. Based on a German homebrew recipe from brother Kurt, who’d apprenticed in Germany, the Widmer Brothers’ American Wheat Ale was so popular it became one of their flagship beers and helped revolutionize the style in the craft brewing scene. 1777 features a medium body with a lingering bitterness and full wheat flavor. ![]()
