In the early 1800s, Napoleon created a continental blockade between England and the Baltic States, blocking imports including English Porters. Craving a rich and malty beer, Poland and Russia, amongst other states, started crafting their own versions, utilizing their regional chilly temps to bottom ferment, or lager, their porters.
